European Union and Georgia celebrate achievements under 18-months project supporting Georgia’s environmental protection system

Key achievements and further developments were presented during an online closing session of the project “Support to implementation of the Environmental Provisions of the EU-Georgia Association Agreement”. The project has complemented Georgia in elaborating legislation on environmental liability; a draft National Marine Environment Strategy and Action Programme; management plans for three emerald sites; reports on air quality aspects; and reports on protected areas monitoring and management. The meeting enabled attendees to learn about key achievements, along with follow-up actions for future cooperation.

“Prompt fulfillment of the Association Agreement obligations is of utmost importance for the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia. Upon deployment of foreign experts, we gained an opportunity to elaborate strategic documents, such as the Marine Environment Strategy and Action Programme, as well as the by-laws based on the Law on Environmental Liability. These documents equip Georgia with framework on succeeding with the implementation of the important reforms, aimed at establishing the effective system of environmental liability and enhancing the ecological state of the Black Sea” - Ms Nino Tandilashvili, Deputy Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture.

“As a global leader in environmental protection, the European Union – has set the latter topic as one of the key priorities for cooperation with Georgia. Upon undertaking various projects, similar to the one discussed at the moment and the one to be commenced shortly, we support the Government of Georgia to embrace success in areas, which have a direct impact on the wellbeing of Georgia’s dwellers. We are looking forward to succeed with solid cooperation with Georgia on environmental issues” – Mr Alexandre Darras, Team Leader in charge of Connectivity, Energy, Environment and Climate at the EU Delegation in Georgia.

Outputs of the project will empower Georgia to accelerate the implementation of the environmental provisions set forth within the EU-Georgia Association Agreement and to advance its environmental protection system, which will translate into enhancing Georgia’s nature and Georgian citizens’ wellbeing.

The online session enjoyed active participation from the project team itself, and respective representatives of the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, the EU Delegation and stakeholders from the civil society.
