Reinstating the Krtsanisi Forest to its previous glory

The National Wildlife Agency under the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture (MEPA) undertakes reinstating efforts of the Krtsanisi Forest, Kura valley infrastructure and grass cover. Mr Levan Davitashvili, Minister of MEPA paid a visit to the Forest for learning more about the efforts.
“We made a vow to our population two years ago, that we would reinstate the Krtsanisi Forest to its previous glory. In two-years’ time, we have managed to fence the territory, install required infrastructure and launch recovery efforts aiming at turning the forest into a desired recreational area for the local dwellers as well as the visitors. The National Wildlife Agency actively complements reinstating efforts and enhances the ecological environment. The forest has a peculiar meaning and restoring its glory complies with the Ministry’s strategy. The forest entails an integral part of Kura valley’s natural ecosystem and it spans as a recreational space between Tbilisi and Rustavi. Nevertheless, we shall embrace our partners’ commitment, such as the company “Energy Project”, which has funded construction of a solar power plant. Such green, sustainable and eco-friendly energy resources will be a great contribution toward thriving the forest” – Minister Davitashvili stated.
The Global Climate Fund’s (GEF) programme “Kura II”, is funded by the UNDP and has commenced construction of a 100 kW Solar System Station. Ms Maka Julaqidze, National Coordinator for the UNDP-GEF International Waters Kura II reiterated that the MEPA will be further joined forces with - for reinstating the Krtsanisi Forest.

Mr Rezo Bezhashvili, Head of the National Wildlife Agency briefed attendees that the Solar System Station will supply electricity to the water pump station, as well as the forest’s irrigation systems, 11 incumbent fishing ponds and light up the forest’s roads and sidewalks.

The National Wildlife Agency’s tremendous efforts have translated into restoring a crucial status of the Krtsanisi Forest between Rustavi and Tbilisi, which will be a joyful area for walking, cycling or driving electric cars.
