Minister Davitashvili joins the 32nd session of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Regional Conference for Europe

The 32nd Session of the FAO Regional Conference for Europe (ERC) was dedicated to discussing sustainable food systems and healthy diets in Europe and Central Asia, and possibilities for fostering family farms. Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia (MEPA), Mr Levan Davitashvili briefed attendees on challenges and success stories of an incumbent period. 

 

 “It is a great pleasure and honor to join you on such an important occasion. While we aknowledge the worldwide effect of the pandemic, the Government of Georgia (GoG) is also fighting with the challenges. Agricultural sector is an integral part of the economy and it employs 43 % of the population. Pandemic has reassured us how vital fostering the agricultural field is. Joining forces and joint approaches will enable us to mitigate global challenges” – Minister Davitashvili stated. 

 

Minister Davitashvili underlined efforts on ensuring oversight over food supply, whether physical presense or logistics during the crisis. Attendees of the conference learned about the MEPA-developed program aiming at caring for farmers and agriculture, which has been an integral part of the GoG-adopted anti-crisis measures, entailing key nine products which had been guaranteed with security and regular prices by the State oversight. 
Fostering smallholders, family farms and rural youth in agriculture in Georgia have beed discussed under the respective agenda item by Minister Davitashvili, who briefed attendees on actions undertaken within the State programs for boosting these priorities. 

 

The 32nd session of the FAO Regional Conference for Europe was convened virtually with the concurrence of the host country, Uzbekistan, and attended by all FAO members in the Europe and Central Asia region.
