The first biosphere reserves in Kakheti

The National Forest Concept for Georgia and entailing amendments to the forests and climate change has hosted a remote meeting, aiming at scrutinizing third phase findings of the project “fostering nomination for establishing of biosphere reserve in East Georgia, Kakheti”. Mr Iuri Nozadze, Deputy Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia (MEPA) briefed attendees of the meeting on the importance of creating three Alazani (Akhmeta and Telavi municipalities) and the first Dedoplistskaro (Dedoplistskaro municipality) biosphere reserves. 


“Biosphere reserve is an instrument, which can complement establishment of unified practice on nature conservation and sustainable use of land; foremost, the latter will have an impact on wellbeing of the local dwellers. I would like to express my gratitude toward our donor and partner organizations for a meaningful contribution to the project:  The Federal Ministry of the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU);  the German Society for International Cooperation (GIZ); Mikhail Zhukov Foundation; and the Regional Environmental Centre for the Caucasus (REC Caucasus). Frankly speaking, joining forces will harvest greater deeds” – Deputy Minister Nozadze stated. 

 


Preparatory works and zoning map of biosphere reserve nomination have also been discussed during the respective meeting, which enjoyed presence of representatives of the European Union, Embassy of the Federal Republic of Georgia, relevant state agencies, international and non-governmental organizations, international experts and interested parties.
