Amids the pandemic, Georgia ensures an undisrupted national forest inventory efforts

The Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia (MEPA) and Deputy Minister, Mr Iuri Nozadze hosted a remote session assessing forest registry throughout 2020. In the course of the meeting, Deputy Minister Nozadze briefed about completing registry efforts in 6 regions and partially commencing forest inventory in Kakheti.


Attendees  to the meeting enjoyed presentation of field work spanning throughout 2019 – 2021, as well as the latter’s analyses and findings, including and not limited to upcoming actions for the year 2021. During 2019 – 2021, forest registry efforts have span over Guria, Mtskheta-Mtianeti, Adjara Autonomous Republic, and Samegrelo – Zemo Svaneti, Samtskhe-Javakheti, Imereti, Shida Kartli regions and their respective forests; the project also entails a part of Kakheti’s forest. By 2021, the project will commence and the remaining regions (Kvemo Kartli, Racha-Lechkhumi, Kvemo Svaneti and remaining area of Kakheti) will also be covered within the registry. Attendees to the meeting learned about required efforts for developing information and monitoring system, as well as future plans. Throughout the meeting, Deputy Minister Nozadze briefed about completing registry efforts in 6 regions and partially commencing forest inventory in Kakheti.


“The year of 2021 will commence field work aiming at elaborating and processing the respective data. Information acquired through national forest registry enables to ensure oversight over Georgia’s forest environment. Findings drawn empower us to develop required strategies for developing forest sector and deliver comprehensive and effective international reporting” – Deputy Minister Nozadze stated.


In 2019, Georgia has been the first country in the South Caucasus region to enjoy financial and technical assistance from Germany to shape and elaborate forest registry. For an effective delivery of the project, a special methodology and technical documentation has been drafted. The core objective of the project is to ensure effective national monitoring system of forests for the state and elaborate an accurate database of the country’s incumbent forests. The information acquired and processed by the forest national inventory will be scrutinized by the decision-makers and ensure a space for an effective decisions.
