Tightening control over grape quality to boost quality of Georgian wine

As an effective approach for perfecting quality of the Georgian wine, control over grape quality will be tightened in the lead up to the vintage of 2021. Sugar composition of the grape entailing the corresponding normative documentation - determines quality of grapes, which translated into market value of the latter. Moreover, a tightened oversight will be deployed toward peculiarities of designations of origin and limit for determining harvest limit. These matters have been discussed at a meeting hosted in Telavi with Mr Otar Shamugia, Deputy Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia, heads of the State Attorney in the Kakheti Region, local majoritarian MPs and mayors of the local municipalities. 

"It is of utmost importance to timely provide farmers with information on activities complementing improvement of Georgian wine. Consultative and liaison divisions of the Ministry will ensure dissemination of information and launch series of meetings with the National Wine Agency throughout the regions with local officials and farmers. Moreover, in an upcoming year, cadastre of vineyards will commence in Kakheti and Racha-Lechkhumi regions, which will be an important milestone for the development of viticulture and production of a high quality wine" - Deputy Minister stated. 


Mr Levan Mukhuzla, chairperson of the National Wine Agency stressed out how consistent and tiresome is the wine perfection process, which largely derives from the quality of vineyards and grape condition; these elements complement quality of Georgian wine, its international reputation and an export price, respectively. Mr Lasha Shalamberidze, head of the international relations department at the Agricultural and Rural Development Agency briefed on activities, which will ensure engagement of farmers to keep themselves familiar with incumbent and planned activities, including activities for complementing production of higher quality of wine. 


Acting State Attorney of the Kakheti region, Mr Irakli Shiolasvili stressed out importance of commencing cadastre efforts and proceeding with vintage, which is of utmost importance for Kakheti, due to consistent increase in vineyards. An organized conduct of the vintage serves as one of the governmental priorities.Â
