Minister Davitashvili: “Namakhvani reservoir will not affect melting process of glaciers”

Does this reservoir accelerate melting process of glaciers? There are various studies, including the ones developed by Georgian scholars, which have entailed detailed model of climate change and has also been complemented experience that we have acquired from the Enguri Dam.

Surface space of Jvari reservoir on the river Enguri exceeds the same space of Namakhvani in 2,5 times. A genuine impact on atmospheric air and humidity from an edge of the reservoir is estimated in 500 meters, however, minor impact of the latter is featured in 5 kilometers.

Namakhvani reservoir project’s farthest shore is located 70 kilometers to the nearest glacier, which significantly fall out from the above-mentioned microclimate scale.

The above-mentioned clearly demonstrates that the Namakhvani reservoir will have almost no impact on glaciers’ melting process.
