Minister Levan Davitashvili: “Hydrogeological data has been comprehensively studied”

“There has been a question regarding how comprehensively hydrological studies have been conducted throughout the project. Our opponents have argued that water resources have not been assessed and an incumbent decision has been based on findings of the previous century. The latter argument is inaccurate. Hydrological data has been studied at a greater detail. Frankly speaking, there are hydrological findings of a 76-years-of-observation up to 2013, which has been undertaken by one of the most experienced and credible Italian companies – “Studio Pietrangeli”. Apart from hydrological studies of the “Studio Pietrangeli”, the research findings have been complemented by the Swiss company “Stucky’s” studies. We are aware that Gumati HPP’s researches are fully compatible with the Namakhvani HPP’s characteristics. Besides, we held hydrological oversight data on Namakhvani, thus a compiled finding has been enclosed within the respective report.

Maximum of surface runoff has been estimated as 10, 000-year repetition, namely, 4900 cubic meters as maximum of maximum. Even if maximum volume of water is launched from Lajanuri – a total sum will not reach 4900 cubic meters. Therefore, the provided data sets greatly conservative projections” – Mr Levan Davitashvili, Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia stated, upon Parliamentary hearing over the Namakhvani HPP.
