Minister Davitashvili: “Agro-insurance enhancement strategy will be unanimously approved”

Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia, Mr Levan Davitashvili hosted a meeting on agro-insurance enhancement strategy with insurance companies, Insurance State Supervision Service of Georgia and representatives of insurance association’s proxies. Minister Davitashvili stressed out importance of insurance as a protection remedy, which safeguards farmers’ activities. The program’s development is a consistent process: “Upon joining forces with various agencies, the Ministry has drafted agro-insurance enhancement strategy, which will be unanimously adopted. Our goal is to increase penetration of insurance system and engagement of vast majority of farmers and all the regions of the country” – Minister Davitashvili stated. 

Mr Davit Onoprishvili, Head of the Insurance State Supervision Service of Georgia stressed out international best practices and an incumbent 7-year experience of Georgia, which is crucial for ensuring healthy competitiveness on insurance market. 

“Importance of drafting strategic document is vital for government, business and farmers to learn about denominations and objectives, which shall be deployed for developing agriculture and agro-insurance, respectively” – Mr Devi Khechinashvili, Head of the Georgian Insurance Association. 

Core objectives of the agro-insurance strategy entails increase of rural-agricultural crops that have been insured, as well as formulation of contemporary risks and modern system of damage assessment. 

The state agro-insurance has been enforced from 2014 and it empowers farmers to safeguard their harvest from climate risks. Within the agro-insurance program and during the period of 2014 – 2020, more than 115, 000 packages have been established, more than 100, 000 hectares of land has been insured and insurance has amounted to 69, 7 million GEL, while co-funding of the Agency is 48 million GEL.
