The Government of Georgia has adopted technical regulation on “Cocoa and chocolate products intended for human consumption”

The Government of Georgia adopted technical regulation on “Cocoa and chocolate products intended for human consumption”, which has resulted from joint efforts of the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia and business sector in compliance with international standards. 

The regulation will complement protection of consumers’ interests, establishment of trustworthy competitiveness at a market and effective functioning of internal markets. It also sets forth cocoa and chocolate production and manages processing, distribution and market placement processes. The regulation determines regulation objects (cocoa fat, cocoa powder, types of chocolate, and other products from chocolate) and requirements for cocoa and chocolate production; it also ensures regulation of chocolate and cocoa products’ composition. 

On July 1, 2023 the regulation will be enacted, however, existing cocoa and chocolate products that have been labeled and launched into the market prior to the regulation and does not comply with the requirements – will be permitted prior to expiration of due date, however not later than January 1, 2024. 

The following regulations have been developed through support from the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia: alcoholic spirits, production of bio-products, milk and dairy products, approval of marketing requirements on poultry meat, hazelnut, honey, flour wheat, fruit juice and other products for human consumption
