Earth Day

“Today, on April 22, we celebrate the Earth Day. “Together we can restore our earth!” – is the theme for commemorating the Earth Day 2021. The Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia is undertaking consistent efforts for shaping an environmental policy, which shall respond to the global challenges.

Our core objective is to ensure healthy environment, undertake efforts for enhancing the latter and raise awareness among the public.

We are actively working on creating new protected territories, as well as enhancement of these in accordance with the international practices, which will ensure protection of Georgia’s unique biodiversity and ecotourism advancement. Recently, space of protected territories has been unprecedently increased to 280 000 hectares and spans across 12 % of an entire territory.

The Forestry Reform and sustainable management of forests is of utmost importance, which sets new perspectives for the new forestry code and determines how to manage forests in a sustainable manner; as forests comprise around 40 % of an entire territory of Georgia.

Throughout the last few years, Georgia has cultivated the law on “Environmental Liability” as a powerful remedy amidst environmental offences, which also serves as a vital precondition for shaping an environmental management in accordance with the European standards.

We have set forth new standards to drastically decrease air pollution from an industrial sector, thus it will make positive impact on enhancing air quality at various cities.

One of the priorities for the Ministry is waste prevention, renewable use and recycling. For achieving the latter objectives, we have launched a national program for plastic waste prevention, which will tackle non-sustainable usage of plastic and decrease damage to an environment.

Educational programs are being actively cultivated, which aspire to assist integration of environmental and agrarian education into schools. For the next four years and at an entire country, 20, 000 primary school teachers will be empowered, which will translate into 250, 000 pupils having better opportunities for acquiring knowledge in matters, such as sustainable development, biodiversity and water resources protection, air protection amidst the pollution, soil management against desertification, agriculture, food safety and quality” – Minister Davitashvili has discussed in his address on the occasion of the “Earth Day”.
