The first-ever Biosphere Reserve in Georgia, to be established in the Dedoplistskaro municipality

The Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia has joined forces with the Dedoplistskaro Mayor’s Office to undertake a biosphere reserve project in the Dedoplistskaro municipality. The respective reserve is a model region, which fosters regional development, sustainable agriculture production and promotes ecotourism.

As a commemoration of the Biodiversity Day, Deputy Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia, Mr Nino Tandilashvili and Dedoplistskaro Mayor, Mr Nikoloz Janiashvili, opened the biosphere reserve tourism center and bird-watching tower in the respective municipality. In the course of the project, various recreational spaces will be arranged, along with a primary infrastructure for the biosphere reserve.

“UNESCO’s biosphere reserves are promising tools for cultivating a unified practice of conservation and sustainable land-use. In 2015, in Georgia, the Ministry has initiated biosphere reserve study, which had been supported by the German Government. The respective efforts have resulted into 3 biosphere reserve and Vashlovani reserve in Dedoplistskaro, which had required arrangement of all the required documentation. I hope that the biodiverse reserves will result into a positive practice of harmonious co-existing of nature and humans. Most importantly climate-smart agriculture, sustainable management of forests and nature conservation efforts” – Deputy Minister Tandilashvili stated.

The Dedoplistskaro biosphere reserve project had been supported by the European Union’s funding and technical assistance of the REC Caucasus.
