The National Environmental Agency launched construction of a new office in Batumi

Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia, Mr Levan Davitashvili enjoyed company of Mr Tornike Rizhvadze, Head of the Adjara Autonomous Republic’s Government and staff members of the National Environmental Agency to observe launching construction of the Agency’s new office. 

“Up to this moment, the Agency has been operating at a poor condition, while the respective institution is a vital body, which shall be enhanced, strengthened and developed. We have been working for few years in order to select a location, assign a territory through assistance of the Adjara Autonomous Republic’s Government. We have launched construction of a new infrastructure, thus, empowering us to undertake research efforts at the high-quality laboratory. Sustaining the Black Sea’s ecosystem is a vital priority for us, as well as an integral part of Georgia’s Association Agreement with the European Union. The Ministry intends to proceed with deploying efforts, supporting existing and recruiting new and young staff, for them to protect our vital resource – the Black Sea’s ecosystem” – Minister Davitashvili stated. 

The new three-floor building will become a home to the vital bodies of the system, such as: fishery, aquaculture and water biodiversity department, Batumi laboratory of the environmental pollution management department, as well as Adjara’s hydrometeorological observatory. International standards will be adhered while arrangement of atmospheric air, water and soil analyses, microbiological, hydrobiological, ichthyology laboratories, which will be equipped with ultramodern machinery-amenities and an infrastructure required for research sphere and with the relevant peculiarities. Highly qualified staffers of the Agency will enjoy working at a fully equipped building with an infrastructure that complies with the international standards.  

A total cost of the project is 1, 300, 000 GEL and a total space of a building is 1872 square meters. 

Mr Tornike Rizhvadze, Head of the Adjara Autonomous Republic’s Government has reiterated that modern infrastructure of the Agency will improve labor environment of staffers and will foster protection of the Black Sea’s ecology and safety. 

“Today is an important day as we pave construction of new infrastructure, which will complement fostering scientific-research potential and ensuring enhancement in the future. Upon commencement of construction works, the National Environmental Agency will be enabled to deepen international cooperation with the Black Sea region, as well as support enhancement of aquaculture and strengthen the Black Sea monitoring” – Mr Ando Aslanishvili, head of the National Environmental Agency stated. 

A new infrastructure of the National Environmental Agency will foster institutional capacity of the environmental programming, which will support implementation of Georgia’s Association Agreement with the European Union (EU). One of these requirements are EU’s Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD) and its implementation, which aims to safeguard the Black Sea from pollution, supporting biodiversity of the sea and sustainable usage of the sea’s biological resources.
