Launching the contest “Green Region 2021”

On June 5, as an effort to commemorate the World Environment Day, the Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia (MEPA), Mr Levan Davitashvili joined Ms Nino Chkhobadze, Chairperson of the Georgian Green Movement/Friends of the Earth Georgia launched the contest “Green Region 2021”. The respective contest is a joint effort of the MEPA, the Georgian Green Movement/Friends of the Earth Georgia in frames of the “Keep Georgia Tidy” project and is held for the 6th consecutive time. 

“The contest “Keep Georgia Tidy” spans across an entire Georgia. Citizens are getting engaged with great enthusiasm and motivation. I believe that the contest is vital for raising awareness. The positive results have already been harvested. Many regions and municipalities are joining the contest with great responsibility, through organizing campaigns and events, which shall result into diminishing number of illegal dumpsites and cases of pollution, annually. The country shall be clean and tidy, thus, each and every member of the society shall fully acknowledge how vital it is to care for an environment and take part in wase management process” – Minister Davitashvili stated. 

Aim of the “Green Region 2021” contest is held nationwide and will announce the following awards: “Green Region”, “Green Municipality”, “Green City/Town”, “Green Village/Community”, “Green/Pretty Street”, “Green/Pretty Yard”, “Green/Pretty Enterprise/Establishment Yard” and “Pretty Balcony”. 

Contestants willing to take part in the contest shall submit a photo/video under the above-mentioned nominations. Entries shall be submitted to the Green Movement/Friends of the Earth Georgia, which is an organizer of an entire contest. Annually, the commission is established, which unites representatives of MEPA and other community organizations. Members of the commission will announce winners to nominations. Winner of the “Green Award 2021” will announce winners in 2022. 

From the day of launching the project, number of dumpsites has decreased in several hundreds, which indicates how responsible society is toward environment. Citizens have been actively joining the efforts, carried out by us, as well as organized solely by them. Annually, nominations of the contest are increasing. This year, the contest “Green Environment 2021” will entail a new category – “Clean and Blue Spring”. I believe that it will be a great success for Georgia, when it becomes the cleanest country” – Ms Chkhobadze stated.

The contest “Green Region” was established in 2015 and has been organized annually. Throughout the years, the contest has demonstrated that citizens have been complementing various efforts, at a nationwide scale, thus, making their own contributions.  

The contest is organized as a campaign “Keep Georgia Tidy” and is implemented through support of the MEPA together with local stakeholders, the Georgian Society of Nature Explorers "Orchis" and Greens Movement of Georgia/Friends of the Earth-Georgia, in cooperation with LEPL Environmental information and Education Centre, Waste Management Company and the Government of Sweden.
