Deputy Minister Nino Tandilashvili attended a media seminar on “Media and Climate Change”

Deputy Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia, Ms Nino Tandilashvili attended a seminar “media and climate change”, which aimed at discussing climate change policies’ formation process and international experience along with approaches for climate change matters’ media coverage.

Deputy Minister Tandilashvili stressed out on the importance of Georgia’s international commitments’ fulfilment and the role of media in these efforts.

“Climate change is among the most crucial matters of the global agenda, which affects and is relevant to our country, among the others. The Paris Agreement has imposed an obligation on the countries to be more ambitious for deploying policies on softening climate changes and decreasing greenhouse gas emissions. Climate change matters for Georgia are part to the Association Agreement with the European Union (EU); therefore, we are working actively with the EU to foster softening of climate change in transport sector, as well as agriculture. Georgia has adopted a strategic document, which has determined national contribution of the country toward greenhouse gas emissions. It is crucial for the media to hold information on vital matters of climate change and those projects, which are implemented by the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia” – Deputy Minister Tandilashvili stated.

In frames of the media seminar, Ms Sophiko Akhobadze, Director of the Regional Environmental Center (REC) for the Caucasus stressed out importance of non-governmental sector engagement into the climate change policy implementation.

The meeting took place through assistance of the Global Environmental Fund (GEF) and United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia and Regional Environmental Center (REC) for the Caucasus, in frames of the project “Integrated Transparency Framework”.

Attendees and journalists of the media seminar discussed effective capacities for ensuring coverage of climate change and future cooperation perspectives with the relevant agencies.
