Minister Davitashvili: “Seedling farming is a vital area for the Ministry’s Scientific-Research Center and the farmers”

“We need to ensure cultivation of knowledge and modern technologies for our farmers; hence, the role of the Scientific-Research Center is of high importance. Research and scientific findings shall be deployed into the practice by the farmers themselves. One of the most crucial matters of the Center is high-quality seedings and their accessibility for our farmers. Certification, accessibility and high quality shall be scrutinized for projecting actions, which will safeguard farmers’ efforts and translate our citizens’ efforts into decent harvest” – Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia stated. 

In frames of the Association Agreement with the European Union and the respective obligations shall be translated into obligatory certification in 2024, with regard to seeds and seedling. Enhancement of seedling sector in Georgia serves as one of the core priority developments for quality control. A well-structured system of seed and seedling materials will serve as a crucial factor for boosting harvest and export potential, increasing competitiveness and attracting investments. 

Since 2015, the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia has been undertaking the seedling materials’ certification system, through the Scientific-Research Center, which has already deployed seedling materials’ certification since 2017. A national catalog has been created, which entails agricultural-rural crops’ which are permitted to be planted and disseminated in the country. 

“Environmental Protection and Rural Development 2030” is a long-term vision of the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia, presented by the Minister himself, at a greater detail.
