Minister Davitashvili: “We need to cultivate quality and food safety standards for accessing export markets and ensuring competitiveness of the Georgian agriculture”

Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia, Mr Levan Davitashvili presented the long-term vision of the Ministry at the presentation “Environmental Protection and Rural Development 2030”, which solely aims to ensure harmonization with the Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Areas (DCFTA). Throughout the last few years, significant steps have been made toward capacity building of the National Food Agency, through technical and legislative enhancement, which has boosted consumer market oversight, cultivation of modern standards, facilitating competitiveness for development of animal health and plant protection. 


•  During the period of 2021 – 2030, the following actions have been undertaken for food safety: Harmonization of the Georgia’s legislation toward the respective legislation of the European Union, as well as cultivation of modern standards of safety; boosting state oversight control and boosting effectiveness of control system; raising awareness among the business sector; ensuring transparency; boosting competitiveness of local production and export potential;


•  As an effort for complementing animal safety, the following actions have been planned: harmonization of the national legislation with the European Union, with regard to animal identification-registration, actions against animal diseases, registration of veterinary medications and control mechanisms, monitoring and oversight system over diseases; elaboration and implementation of preventive and liquidation programs for preventive mechanisms of infectious diseases among the animals;


•  Plant protection: enhancing phytosanitary capacities; harmonization of the national plant protection legislation with the European Union; enhancing diagnostics over the hazardous bodies, as well as quarantine measures; ensuring phytosanitary monitoring and planning resistance remedies; upon successful implementation of the plant protection actions, phytosanitary wellbeing will be maintained and food safety ensured; local agricultural-rural production’s competitiveness and export potential will be boosted; plant protection capacities and the respective national legislation will be harmonized with the European Union.


Upon the initiative of the Prime Minister of Georgia, Mr Irakli Gharibashvili, 10-year action plan of the Government will be translated into individual presentations developed by the Ministries; these agencies will present their visions, which will be scrutinized as guidelines for economic stability and strength of the State, throughout the following years. 


The Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia is the first Government agency, which has presented 10-year development plan of the field.
