Minister Davitashvili: “Small agricultural-rural fields, ploughed areas within Georgia’s lowland shall be fully ameliorated. This is an ambitious plan, which we will ensure by 2030”

Today, Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia, Mr Levan Davitashvili presented the long-term vision of the Ministry at the presentation of the “Environmental protection and Rural Development 2030”.

The event enjoyed presence of Mr Irakli Gharibashvili, Prime Minister of Georgia, members of the Parliament, representatives of the Government of Georgia, Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, State Trustees, Diplomatic missions, international and donor organizations, stakeholder groups and academic institutions, as well as the farmers attended the presentation.

The respective 10-year plan will commence by the end of 2030 and will ensure construction/irrigation/modernization of irrigation infrastructure, which will cover more than 227, 000 hectares; meanwhile, drained space covered within the efforts will exceed 74, 000 hectares.

“The core area for enhancing agriculture is to complement public infrastructure enhancement. This is a core responsibility of the government, which has embraced significant steps from the Georgian Dream government.

Frankly speaking, abandoned fields would have been impossible to cultivate for harvesting, however, we have been able to bring major changes upon deploying modern and organized agricultural development, as well as making investments into the infrastructure.

During the period of 2012 – 2021, irrigated fields have increased significantly. Due to the geographical diversity, the West Georgia requires drainage. We aim at ambitious goals; we will devout significant attention to drainage and water-provided lands, which will stand at an overall 300, 000 hectares. This is the maximum that our country’s geography and territories can enable us with, thus, we shall produce high-quality production there. Apart from major and small Caucasian and mountainous territories, small agricultural-rural fields shall be provided with amelioration, at a greater extent. This is an ambitious plan, which Georgia will definitely fulfill by 2030” – Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia, Mr Levan Davitashvili stated.
