Mukhuri beekeeping efforts to restore the population of the Georgian Bee in Samegrelo region

Deputy Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia, Mr Solomon Pavliashvili, Mayor of the Chkhorotsku municipality, Mr David Gogua and Mr Levan Ujmajuridze, Director of the Agricultural Scientific-Research Center observed the process of deploying efforts to restore the population of the Georgian bee in the Samegrelo region. The Mukhuri Beekeeping Base has been operating since 2017 and has carried out significant actions, which have translated into unique outcomes.

“Mukhuri beekeeping breeding facility has 70-years of record, which complements toward enriching mother bees. Enhancing of the Mukhuri base is vital for developing the respective field. The Ministry will deploy tireless efforts to save and expand Georgian varieties” – Deputy Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia, Mr Solomon Pavliashvili stated.

Apart from recovery actions at the Mukhuri Base, Georgian bees are provided with genetic passports, as well as expanding them within and outside the country. The Georgian bees of Samegrelo are especially productive, hardly get tired and proboscis.  

Since 2017, breeding and reproductive bee families have resulted into 1700 mother bees, which have been provided to the farmers every year. The Base has been actively engaged into recruiting-training of beekeepers-farmers. Regular and free trainings are offered on breeding and expanding bee families, as well as preventive actions against the deceases. 

The State Breeding Facility in Mukhuri was established in 1949 and aimed at breeding mother bees, production of packages and export to various countries. The respective base was restored in 2017 by the Agricultural Scientific-Research Center of the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia.
