Deputy Minister Solomon Pavliashvili attends an online seminar “packaging technologies and circular economy”

Deputy Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia, Mr Solomon Pavliashvili attended an online seminar on “packaging technologies and circular economy” organized by the World Packaging Organization (WPO). The respective seminar has been the first one organized by the WPO in Georgia and it touched upon packaging technologies, circular economy and sustainability to an environment; moreover, attendees scrutinized ongoing novelties in the packaging industry and shared international expertise. In his opening speech, Deputy Minister Pavliashvili thanked the European Union and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) for supporting the program; he also stressed out on the importance of environmental policies in Georgia and the respective legislation drafted in this regard. 


“Management of packaging waste is one of the crucial areas of the country’s environmental policy. As you are well-aware, the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia has actively worked with the Georgian Government to develop a plan of waste management strategy and an entailing action plan. In frames of an extended consumer responsibility, the Government of Georgia has already adopted 4 regulations; it is vital for us to deploy our decisions in a close cooperation with the private sector. I would like to express my gratitude toward sharing international experience and deploying investments into the country for developing the respective sector” – Deputy Minister Pavliashvili stated. 


As Deputy Minister Pavliashvili briefed, an extended consumer responsibility serves as a core financial instrument in the developing countries, which fosters circular economy, which saves resources and ensures formation of a contemporary system for waste management. 


An online seminar “EU Innovative Action for Private Sector Competitiveness in Georgia” was organized as a joint effort of the European Union and United Nations, in cooperation with the PMAG Packagers Cluster. It is vital that PMAG Packagers Cluster is an only Georgian organization, which is a member of the World Packaging Organization and unites 65 members from 45 countries. 
Representatives of various agencies of the Ministry and their heads attended the seminar along with the representatives of the producing and packaging companies.
