Engaging residents in the final battle against the Asian Stink Bug is of utmost importance
Mr. George Khanishvili, First Deputy Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, got familiar with the ongoing measures taken against the brown marmorated stink bug in western Georgia.In the course of the meetings, Mr. Khanishvili together with the state representatives of Guria and Samegrelo regions and local municipalities got information about current situation and ongoing activities carried out in the regions.
The participants summed up the results and noted, that measures taken against the stink bugs were successful in 2021 as well, the damage to crops was reduced to the minimum extent possible, locals and farmers received a good crop of corn and hazelnuts.
The sides also mentioned, that at the final stage, pests started preparing their shelters ( entering homes and buildings) for winter months, therefore, along with the state measures taken against the stink bugs, the engagement of local residents in the aforementioned activities and making them use mechanical methods is crucial.
The Head of the National Food Agency, Mr. Zurab Chekurashvili and representatives of the Coordination Management Center for fighting against the Asian Stink Bug attended the working meeting.
This year, within the measures taken against the Asian Stink Bug, cold spraying was used on more than 35 thousand hectares in the villages of western Georgia, including corn fields and shrubs covering more than 22 thousand hectares and 100 hectares of forest areas in Samegrelo and Zemo Svaneti, Guria, Imereti, Racha-Lechkhumi and Adjara regions. In total, thermal fogging technology was used on more than 70,000 hectares of area; More than 5,000 pheromone clamps and more than 40,000 "Attract and Kill" stations were installed in western Georgia.
