Nino Tandilashvili attended a project kick-off meeting ‘‘Restoring Ecosystems to Reduce Drought Risk and Increase Resilience’’

Deputy Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture Mrs.Nino Tandilashvili took part in a project kick-off meeting ‘’Restoring Ecosystems to Reduce Drought Risk and Increase Resilience’’.

 

" Against the background of climate change, the need to fight the land degradation is gaining importance not only in Georgia but all over the world. By involvement of international partners, we should properly assess the situation in the respective area and  set forth specific measures for the regions facing the problem of desertification. Moreover, we should use international practice, which will allow us to mitigate desertification processes and make them less harmful to both our farmers and biodiversity ”said Nino Tandilashvili.

 

In the course of the meeting, the participants presented reports on Global Standards for Nature based Solutions (NBS) and discussed how to use NBS opportunities to promote sustainable land management. They also emphasized the importance of the project at the national level, which implies implementation of obligations taken under the international agreements and application of nature-based solutions (NbS) against drought.

 

 The project   aims to support governments in promoting integrated ecosystem restoration measures into the drought management and reduce the impact of drought by using  Nature-based Solutions approach (NBS). The project is funded by the Austrian Development Agency (operational unit of Austrian Development Cooperation) and is being implemented in Georgia by CENN under the oversight of IUCN.

 Mrs. Maia Bitadze, Chairperson of the Environmental Protection and Natural Resources Committee, Parliament of Georgia; Mr. Boris Erg, Director of IUCN Regional Office for Eastern Europe and Central Asia; Mrs. Nino Shavgulidze, CENN Board Member and representatives of government agencies, non-governmental and international organizations attended the meeting.
