Important document developed to support Georgia in becoming a country targeted at waste prevention and recycling

National Plastic Waste Prevention Program has been developed jointly by the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture and Caucasian Environmental Non-Government Organizations Network CENN, through support of the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.


The presentation of the program was opened by the Deputy Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture Mr. Solomon Pavliashvili.


The event included a panel discussion, where speakers stressed the importance and need for plastic waste prevention. The participants and guests had an opportunity to see an exhibition of plastic waste collection as well as recycling companies operating in the country.


"In recent years, our Ministry has implemented significant reforms in terms of waste management. An important document was developed, which will support Georgia to become a country targeted at waste prevention and recycling and will ensure sustainable and safe consumption and production of plastic products. The respective document envisages the 10-year strategy and 5-year action plan, entailing specific course of action on how to adopt the circular economy practices in the plastic waste management sector, putting emphasis on the prevention, reuse and recycling of plastic waste- ‘’Solomon Pavliashvili stated.  


The National Plastic Waste Prevention Program has been developed in accordance with the requirements of the Waste Management Code, the National Waste Management Strategy (2016-2030) and the National Action Plan.


The National Plastic Waste Prevention Program incorporates the best international practices and approaches in the field of plastic management, which will be translated into the prevention of plastic waste.


The event was attended by the Deputy Chair of the Environmental Protection and Natural Resources Committee, Mrs. Khatia Tsilosani, Ambassador of the Kingdom of Norway to Georgia, Mrs. Helene Sand Andresen and CENN Executive Director Mrs. Nana Janashia.
