Government of Georgia approves draft projects on the nominations for biosphere reserves

 Government of Georgia approves draft projects on the nominations for biosphere reserves:

“Three Alazani Biosphere Reserve” and “Dedoplistskaro Biosphere Reserve”, which are internationally recognized within the framework of UNESCO's Programme on ‘’Man and the Biosphere’’ (MAB) and will be further received and verified by the UNESCO Secretariat.  

 

On behalf of the Government of Georgia, the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture submits supporting documentation for the nomination of “Three Alazani Biosphere Reserve” in Akhmeta and Telavi municipalities and “Dedoplistskaro Biosphere Reserve” in Dedoplistskaro Municipality to the UNESCO Secretariat.

  

With the establishment of the Biosphere Reserve, the first model region will be created in the South Caucasus region to ensure the introduction of a common practice of conservation and sustainable land use. Moreover, by creating a biosphere reserve, the area of protected areas included in the international networks will be expanded by 233,857 hectares and total area will make up 22% of the country’s territory.

  

The protected areas included in the international network will serve to the development of the green economy, it will contribute to the introduction of climate-friendly technologies and sustainable forest management and advance biodiversity conservation through integrated approach.The study on a potential of biosphere reserve was initiated by the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, in partnership with the Mikheil Zukov Foundation and the Caucasus Regional Environmental Center (REC Caucasus),with the support of the German Government and the European Union. Representatives of self-government and local residents were actively involved in the process.
