In accordance with the amendments to the Law of Georgia on the ‘’Establishment and Management of Kolkheti Protected Areas’’, the confluence of the River Rioni and Black Sea will be a part of the Kolkheti National Park

As a result of the amendments to the Law, the area of Kolkheti National Park will increase by 671.5 ha and the total area will make up 44,980 ha (the land area will increase - by 196.5 ha and will include 29 229 ha,  while the sea aquatory will increase by 475 ha and ultimately it will make up - 15 751 ha)


Kolkheti National Park   has become particularly important since 2021, when it was listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.


The confluence of the River Rioni and Black Sea to gain the status of a protected area is crucial for conservation of unique sturgeon species in Georgia, which are on the verge of extinction not only in Georgia but around the world.
