Otar Shamugia: " In 2020, negotiations on the export of products of animal origin started upon request of certain companies"

 The Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, Mr.Otar Shamugia commented on the market diversification related issues at the meeting with the media representatives, after the Government session, he, noted that market diversification -to boost the sale of agricultural products is one of the important factors, which is also related to the export of products of animal origin.

"Firstly, I would like to note, that it is very important to take measures for market diversification; We have been working on the respective issues over the years. We actively cooperate with various companies to boost exports to markets such as the EU, USA, China, etc. thereby, we have certain results.

Last year, the food products’ export hit a record high,  amounting to USD 142 billion, up almost USD 200 million if compared with 2021, which resulted from the joint work of companies and Government agencies. We will continue to work actively in this area "Mr. Shamugia said.

The Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture noted, that there is a lot of speculation on the export of Georgian products of animal origin to the Eurasian Economic Union member states.

"Firstly, I would like to note, that we are working with the European Union. The National Food Agency has a concrete plan on implementing the standards and regulations to export Georgian products of animal origin to the European Union.

Last year, the honey was allowed to be exported from Georgia to the EU and we had a very good result in this area in 2021. We continue exporting products of animal origin to Russia and other countries of the Eurasian Union. The negotiation process started upon request of certain companies"
In 2020, the National Food Agency commenced its work on the respective issue. In addition to providing certain documentation and information, we did not have any communication with the Russian side. However, a few days ago, we received a response, saying, that the products of 15 companies are allowed to be exported to the Russian market" - said Mr. Otar Shamugia.
