Otar Shamugia: "Our goal is to encourage farmers and entrepreneurs to have access to different markets"

The Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, Mr. Otar Shamugia, commented on the possibility of exporting dairy products from Georgia, noting that, unfortunately, the statement made on the respective issue was deliberately misinterpreted.

"I would like to once again explain what we are dealing with. Our main task and goal are to encourage farmers and entrepreneurs to have access to various markets, We have ‘’concrete results’’ in this direction and these results are reflected in ‘’concrete numbers’’. We have a significant increase in exports to various countries, including EU countries;

We are running a very active campaign to promote wine exports, through the involvement of different companies. The representatives of our National Wine Agency are currently paying a visit to the United States to run results-driven relevant communication and marketing campaigns.

We have tangible and ‘’concrete results’’ in these areas. The same can be said about promoting the sale of other products. First of all, our priority market is the European Union. We are making efforts to introduce the standards and regulations necessary for the export of products of animal origin. Moreover, we have achieved the first result, namely, exports of Georgian honey to the EU had increased nine times in 2021 compared to the previous year.

As part of our policy, in 2020 we had a communication with the member states of the Eurasian Union, regarding possible exports of products of animal origin, the communication was held upon the request of our entrepreneurs to support their activities.

Two years later, a few days ago, we received the answer. We have also heard comments made by entrepreneurs regarding the export of dairy products. Currently, we depend on the import of dairy products “to some extent”, and enterprises in our country have no resources to export such goods on various markets. Therefore, I do not think this is an actual issue " Mr. Otar Shamugia said.
