Otar Shamugia: "Currently, the supply of products is running smoothly, and we do not see any threats at this stage "

After the session of the Government of Georgia, the Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, Mr. Otar Shamugia answered questions posed by journalists about the current situation related to the supplies of food products in the country.

"We have daily communication with the importers, I have stated about it many times. We, all of us saw some agitation, which was caused only by the fact, that a certain number of people
started making totally unnecessary purchases to replenish their home supplies.

This applied to certain products, especially sugar, which is not imported to Georgia from either Russia or Ukraine. Therefore, there was no reason for agitation." Mr. Otar Shamugia stated.

According to the Minister, delays are not expected, regarding other products either, including wheat. The country has adequate supplies of both wheat and flour.

"We are monitoring the situation. Obviously, we are cooperating with the private sector, businesses, importers and, if necessary, we are ready to support the establishment of relevant markets and contacts, from which it may be necessary to import specific products in the future.

However, at present,  the supply of products is running smoothly, and we do not see any threats at this stage, "- said Mr. Otar Shamugia.

The Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture stressed, that there were some disruptions in the supply chain due to increased procurement and not by a lack of supplies.

“Increased procurement is causing some disruptions in the supply chain, which needs some time to resolve. Some stores may have delays, but this will pass in a few days and supplies will be replenished,” the Minister said.
"If supply problem was real, then it would not be possible to replenish it and we would be dealing with food shortages in the country, " said the Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia.
