Project ‘’ Updating the Red List of Georgia’’ is being launched at the initiative of the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture

The project is being implemented in cooperation with the Ilia State University and the German Society for International Cooperation (GIZ), with the financial support of the German government. The presentation of the results achieved within the project was held in Krtsanisi Forest Park.

 

The "Red List" of Georgia was updated for the first time in Georgia by groups of scientists, and statistical data and scientific information created over the years were processed within the project, which was launched in 2020. As a result of the aforementioned activities, the conservation status of hundreds of species has been restored. 
It should be mentioned, that the current "Red List" of Georgia was approved in 2006 and has not been overviewed/updated thenceforth.

 

The enforcement of the Law on Biodiversity, which was developed by the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, also implementation of the commitments taken under the EU-Georgia Association Agreement, conservation and sustainable management of species in compliance with the completely different, internationally recognized methodology will be based on the updated information about ‘’Red List" of Georgia. 

 

At this stage, the draft law on Biodiversity is ready to be submitted to the Government.
After the adoption of the Law on Biodiversity, different mechanisms will be introduced for the classification and protection of species, which are in compliance with the guidelines of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

The event was attended by the representatives of state and international organizations, the non-governmental sector and scientific circles.
