The Government of Georgia approves the Draft Law on the Establishment and Management of Tana and Tedzami Protected Areas

Today, at the session of the Government of Georgia, the draft law prepared by the Ministry of Environment Protection and Agriculture on the establishment and management of the Tana and Tedzami Protected Areas has been approved.

The draft law on the creation and management of Tana and Tedzami protected areas envisages the establishment of the Tana Reserve and the Tana and Tedzami Protected Landscape, with an area of 32,850 hectares in Shida Kartli region,  Gori Municipality (Tana reserve (total area 10,986 hectares) and Tana and Tedzami protected area in total (2164 hectares).

Distinguished by the diversity of flora and fauna species, the areas established in the Tana and Tedzami valleys are an “important site” for biodiversity conservation. The new protected locations will seek to protect flora and fauna widespread in the area but included in the ‘’Red List’’ of Georgia that marks endangered species.

Therefore, it is extremely important to create a protected area in the Tana and Tedzami valleys.

The protected areas will ensure the protection of unique ecosystems, preservation of historical and cultural landscape, sustainable use of natural resources, as well as the development of tourism-recreational infrastructure and full utilization of recreational potential, which will be a significant source of income for local residents.
