Otar Shamugia gets familiar with the fulfillment of obligations imposed on the company "RMG"

The Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture Mr. Otar Shamugia, together with the Chairperson of the Environmental Protection And Natural Resources Committee at the Parliament of Georgia, Mrs. Maia Bitadze and Members of the Working Group on Environmental Pollution in the Kvemo Kartli region paid a visit to the town of Kazreti, Bolnisi district.

The Government officials got familiar with the environmental measures taken by the company ''RMG'', they inspected the water storage infrastructure and treatment plants built with the latest technologies, which protect the rivers - Poladauri, Kazretula and Mashavera from water pollution.

“One of the main and important directions of our environmental policy is to enable large enterprises to fulfil obligations and requirements imposed under the environmental legislation within a reasonable time. The respective enterprises make a significant contribution to the economic growth of the country, including, the hiring of multiple people. Accordingly, the functioning, operation and development of the aforementioned enterprises are crucial, although they should not hurt the environment. We actively cooperate with the respective companies;

Currently, we have got closely acquainted with the ongoing works in the company “RMG”. We agreed, that the company is making progress in several areas. However, there is still some work to be done, and there are some errors that need to be corrected. We should work with these companies, and with the involvement of the civil sector, we will continue to monitor the process in the future as well,” Mr. Otar Shamugia said.

 According to the Chairperson of the Environmental Protection and Natural Resources Committee at the Parliament of Georgia, Mrs. Maia Bitadze, the environmental management plans set by the state for companies are a step forward in the European space. The Ministry and the Parliament will carry on monitoring in the future as well.

"We went through a very difficult period, but the results were worth it. For the first time, the environmental violations were not detected, when the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture inspected the company "RMG Gold", which is a very good achievement, but there are questions, shortcomings and violations related to other companies of "RMG". "We think, that the company will gradually correct these violations," said Mrs. Nino Burchuladze, a representative of the Working Group on Environmental Pollution in the Kvemo Kartli Region.

Four years ago, the Ministry imposed the long-term and short-term environmental obligations on the company. According to the representative of the company, the company ‘’RMG’’ had correspondence with the Ministry regarding more than 100 environmental liability issues aiming to implement environmental mitigation measures, for which, the respective company carried out large-scale activities and a significant part of the commitments are already near completion.
