George Khanishvili meets the representatives of the local government of Guria and Adjara regions

The First Deputy Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, Mr. George Khanishvili and the Head of the National Food Agency, Mr. Zurab Chekurashvili paid a visit to Western Georgia, where they got familiar with the ongoing measures taken to combat the Asian stink bug.


The Deputy Minister of Agriculture of Adjara Mrs. Irma Abkhazava and the Deputy State Representative in the Guria region Mrs. Ketevan Moistsrapishvili, as well as other representatives of the local municipalities of Guria and Adjara regions, attended the working meeting at the House of Culture in Ureki.



Mr.  Khanishvili was informed about the current situation and planned events in the regions. It was mentioned that, in the reporting period, the main challenges are related to bad weather, which may cause damage to crops, namely hazelnuts, damage is also caused by Asian stink bugs and other pest diseases.

Mr. Khanishvili emphasized the importance of the active involvement of farmers and the role of local self-governments while providing information to the residents.


"During the meeting, we discussed the impact of climatic conditions on hazelnut harvest and related risks. Each farmer should take into account, that it is important to undertake crop treatment activities according to the scheme to obtain a quality and large quantity of crops. I would like to address farmers and ask them to do their best, to take advantage of warm, dry weather and apply insecticides against the Brown Marmorated Stink Bugs ", said Mr. George Khanishvili.

All resources are mobilized and planned activities are being carried out to conduct monitoring and take control of invasive pests, also to inform residents about the Asian Stink Bugs in Western Georgia. The Coordinating Management Center for the Fight against the Brown Marmorated Stink Bug actively cooperates with the representatives of local authorities. Meetings with beekeepers and fruit farmers are held regularly.
