Amendment to the National Waste Management Strategy of Georgia 2016-2030 will be made and the New National Action Plan 2022-2026 will be in full swing

 The Government of Georgia has made a decision today, upon which, the amendment will be made in the National Waste Management Strategy of Georgia 2016-2030, and the New National Action Plan 2022-2026 will be approved.

The Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture will coordinate the implementation of the National Waste Management Strategy of Georgia 2016-2030 and the National Action Plan for Waste Management. The implementation report will be submitted to the Government of Georgia once in three years.

 

Under the amendment, four new strategic objectives will be added to nine already existing goals of the National Waste Management Strategy to address new challenges. 

 

New strategic objectives include the following: improvement in hazardous waste management, plastic waste management, creation and implementation of biodegradable waste collection and treatment systems and improvement of management for inert, construction and demolition waste; 
 

It should be mentioned, that new tasks are created based on a “new reality’’.

The National Waste Management Strategy 2016-2030  aims to define the waste management policy and goals at the national level for 15 years, it also seeks to ensure the best international experience in the process of developing a waste management system in Georgia - through gradual convergence with the goals and objectives of the European waste management policy.

 

The National Waste Management Action Plan 2022-2026 has been developed in compliance with the Waste Management Code and Strategy, embracing relevant measures, such as: 

 

Improving legislation and its full harmonization with the EU regulations; Full provision of municipal waste collection service for all settlements; implementation of the system of separate collection of municipal household waste; Arrangement of new landfills and transfer stations in compliance with the international standards and closure of old landfills; Creation and implementation of construction and demolition waste collection and processing systems;
Strengthening of capacities for hazardous waste management; promotion of plastic waste prevention and treatment measures; Creation and implementation of biodegradable waste collection and processing systems, development and implementation of tariff policy by the "polluter pays" principle; promoting the introduction of modern waste recycling technologies; Raising awareness and strengthening the capacities of the parties involved.
