Otar Shamugia meets representatives of the hazelnut sector

Minister Otar Shamugia held a meeting with the representatives of the hazelnut sector.  The discussion touched upon existing challenges facing the production and sale of hazelnut crops, possible solutions, the current situation of the hazelnut sector on the international market, and the price formation, which is regulated by the market. It should be mentioned, that about the above-mentioned issues, Georgia is largely dependent on the crop yield and price in the hazelnut sector in Turkey. The parties discussed the demand-supply policy in the European markets as well.


The Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, Mr. Otar Shamugia emphasized, that promoting the development of the hazelnut sector is a priority for the state, therefore,  the Ministry is in active communication with the hazelnut sector associations and hazelnut growers.


"The Ministry is making its best efforts to help hazelnut farmers in harvesting high-quality crop yield. The measures to prevent the spread of invasive species taken by the state jointly with the hazelnut growers association are crucial, and the active engagement of hazelnut farmers in this process is of the utmost importance," said Mr. Shamugia.


Mr. Alexander Motserelia, State Representative the of Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti region outlined the progress made through joint efforts of the government and the private sector in the hazelnut field.
As stated by the Minister, the production of quality products is crucial. Only high-quality products are competitive and high-priced on the international markets.


The importance of improving the knowledge of farmers and introducing new technologies for the development of the hazelnut sector was underlined during the meeting.

Mr. George Khanishvili, the First Deputy Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, and representatives of relevant agencies within the system of the Ministry attended the meeting.
