As mentioned, the work is already underway for setting up a new regional hazardous waste disposal facility. The respective project is being implemented with the financial support of the European Union (EU) and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD). The hazardous waste disposal facility will meet the requirements of the European Union legislation.

The implementation of the aforementioned project will shape the hazardous waste management system in the country and ensure a clean and safe environment.

The Deputy Minister stated, that the National Waste Management Strategy and New Action Plan were approved in Georgia. Furthermore,  four new strategic objectives were added to nine already existing goals of the National Waste Management Strategy to address new challenges, including the improvement in hazardous waste management.

Therefore, in the hazardous waste management process, it is necessary to have a hazardous waste landfill, which will be in compliance with European standards. The support of financial institutions, as well as the active involvement of the Ministries, are crucial for the construction of a new landfill’’  said Mr. Solomon Pavliashvili.

The Regional Director of the European Bank for Development and Reconstruction (EBRD) stated, that the management of hazardous waste is the main prerequisite for ensuring a sustainable environment.
