George Khanishvili meets the representatives of Turkish Irrigation Company - General Directorate of State Hydraulic Works (DSI)

The First Deputy Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture Mr. George Khanishvili held a meeting with the representatives of Turkish Irrigation Company - General Directorate of State Hydraulic Works (DSI)

 

The representatives of the Turkish delegation summed up the results of their visit to Georgia and discussed areas for possible future cooperation with the main focus on the water supply and irrigation system.

 

As part of their seven days visit to Georgia, the representatives of the Turkish Irrigation Company inspected the Kvemo Samgori irrigation system, the Paldo headworks, the hydro-technical structures of the Sioni and Tbilisi reservoirs and got acquainted with the activities of the service centers, and the specificity of their work.

Turkish specialists shared their experiences with their Georgian colleagues regarding the establishment of water user organizations and water tariff policies. The conversation touched upon the Hydrometry and water measurement-related issues, the methodology for determining water distribution systems, water restrictions and limits, and the issues of operation and maintenance of irrigation infrastructure.

 

The First Deputy Minister, Mr. George Khanishvili noted that the institutional development of "Georgian Amelioration " LTD and the preparation of the relevant legislative base are priority directions for the Ministry; Therefore, sharing the experience of the Turkish side will be crucial to overcoming the challenges faced by the irrigation field in the country.


The challenges in the irrigation sector of Georgia were analyzed during the meeting, whereupon, the Turkish side expressed its readiness to prepare recommendations and suggestions, also to invite Georgian specialists to Turkey to gain on-the-ground practical experience, provide re-training courses and raise skills and qualifications for the employees of "Georgian Amelioration" LLC and, if necessary, invite Turkish engineers and field specialists to Georgia.

 

The issues for deepening bilateral cooperation in the fields of land resources management, soil protection, and land consolidation have been also discussed by parties.
