Nino Tandilashvili participates in the High- Level Conference "10th Anniversary of the Covenant of Mayors in the Eastern Partnership Region"

The Deputy Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, Mrs. Nino Tandilashvili participated in the High- Level conference "10th Anniversary of the Covenant of Mayors in the Eastern Partnership Region" organized within the framework of the EU-funded project Covenant of Mayors East (CoM East).

During the conference, the parties discussed the progress achieved by the signatory cities of the Agreement, challenges and barriers encountered in the field, also effective recipes for achieving success.

"We are well aware of the impact of climate change in our everyday life, how important it is to adapt to climate change and mitigate the aforementioned processes. The Covenant of Mayors envisages the implementation of climate-smart initiatives at the municipal level, thus, countries can take important measures for climate change adaptation. The European Union is our main partner in this process. The Government of Georgia will actively continue to support this initiative both at the central and municipal levels", said Mrs. Nino Tandilashvili.

Within the framework of the respective agreement, the Eastern Partnership countries have created a strong and supportive unity throughout the ten years.

The Covenant of Mayors is a large-scale initiative of municipalities fostering an ambition for climate and energy actions, discussing energy and climate change-related issues, sharing experiences and exchanging best practices among project signatories.  Signatories pledge to reduce CO2 emissions by at least 40% by 2030 and to increase their resilience to the impacts of climate change and develop a joint approach to climate change mitigation and adaptation.

During the conference, the launch of the third phase of the "Covenant of Mayors" was celebrated jointly with the 10th anniversary of the project of Eastern Partnership countries.

More than 150 representatives of central and local government, local self-government bodies and associations, international organizations and other stakeholders from Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine attended the conference.
