Otar Shamugia: "We should support the harvesting process and enable all farmers to harvest, store, sell their citrus crop, and get income"

The Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture Mr. Otar Shamugia and the Chairman of the Agrarian Affairs Committee of the Parliament of Georgia Mrs. Nino Tsilosani, together with the Minister of Agriculture of the Autonomous Republic of Adjara Mr. Zaza Shavadze visited the garden of Malkhaz Kenchadze in the village of Gvara, where they met with the local farmers and participated in the tangerine harvesting process.

"The harvesting and selling of citrus fruits have started in Adjara. As we are all well aware, the citrus fruit is an essential source of income for a particular part of the population both in Adjara and Guria regions. We should support the harvesting process and enable all farmers to harvest, store, sell their citrus crops, and get revenue. Therefore, we have created the headquarter to coordinate the harvesting process. Moreover,   the Adjara government decided to issue a subsidy.

Up to 20 enterprises receive tangerines for further processing and export, and the harvesting process runs smoothly. We have the same approach concerning other crop cultures as well, and help farmers to harvest their crop and get the appropriate income fully," said Mr. Otar Shamugia.

The farmer Malkhaz Kenchadze has planted 700 trees of tangerine on 0.7 ha. of agricultural land area. This year, the farmer expects a harvest of up to 10 tonnes.

According to the farmer, the state support measures to promote the sale of citrus are outstanding support for farmers, who also take advantage of the citrus subsidy.
