The Government of Georgia approves the Draft Law " On Industrial Emissions"

At today’s session, the Government of Georgia approved the draft law "On Industrial Emissions" developed by the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture.

Under the respective draft law, from 2026, new obligations will come into effect for the private sector, imposing entrepreneurs to equip their large enterprises and improve the technological process. Moreover, negotiations with the European Union have been successful. In consequence, several enterprises will be evaluated in the coming years and the best environmental technologies will be introduced in the selected pilot company with the support of the EU project.

In 2026, the Draft Law  “ On Industrial Emissions” will gradually enter into force.

The draft law has been developed in compliance with the Association Agreement between the EU and the European Atomic Energy Community, their Member States, and Georgia, based on the European Parliament and the European Council Directive  " On Industrial Emissions".

The draft law  “ On Industrial Emissions” envisages a new integrated permitting system for preventing, reducing, and controlling air, water, and soil pollution caused by industrial activities in the country. The project also includes the prevention of waste production. Furthermore, the draft law will regulate and take control of all industrial activities (up to 200 large enterprises) that affect the environment and human health.

It is also noteworthy that the adoption of the draft law will further push the development of new mechanisms for the prevention and reduction of environmental pollution from industrial activities, which will be in full compliance with EU legislation and European standards.

The State follows the plan determined under the policy for the protection of atmospheric air, which is in line with the obligations taken by the EU-Georgia Association Agreement.
