State support program for hazelnut production provides benefits to farmers.

Some farmers have already benefitted from the state support program for hazelnut production.

"As part of the program, certain areas of hazelnut plantations were already funded. Hazelnut is an extremely important crop for many regions of Western Georgia, which continues stable development, considering the increase in the average yield per hectare, and improving the quality indicators", said the First Deputy Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, Mr. George Khanishviliat at the meeting with farmers and representatives of local municipalities in Samegrelo and Imereti regions.

The representatives of the Hazelnut Producers Association, the processing sector, exporters, and delivery points attended the meeting.

During the meeting, Mr. Khanishvili spoke extensively about the farmer support scheme as a part of the state initiative to promote hazelnut production.

As mentioned, the program aims at fostering the hazelnut industry and expanding its export potential.
As part of the program, the owners of the hazelnut orchards will get points on their cards to purchase plant maintenance products - in the amount of GEL 500 GEL per hectare. Moreover, within the program, a cadastre will be created, which will include a detailed description and inventory of data concerning hazelnut orchards.

According to the deputy regional representative of Imereti, Besik Gofodze, the initiative has gained tremendous interest, and meetings are running regularly to provide farmers with information.

As of today, within the program, 37 thousand hectares of hazelnut orchards are registered throughout the country; The number of owners and co-owners of the hazelnut gardens exceeds 85 thousand.
