Otar Shamugia: "Increasing wheat crop production to 50% remains our priority."

"It is not reasonable to make a decision that will directly or indirectly lead to a rise in bread prices. If the price of wheat and flour increases in the future, it will directly affect the price of bread. As for the dynamics of the flour milling companies. According to data of the last three months of 2023, approximately 40 thousand tonnes of wheat and the same quantity of flour have entered the country. Therefore, we cannot say that wheat does not enter the country. Even if it is a small quantity, it comes in, and it depends on a  wide range of factors. Accordingly, we cannot set the price of wheat in the market.

The price is set by those large producers who received an abundant crop last year. Accordingly, our policy is as follows: of course, we should support farmers to produce more products, to have more harvests per hectare: instead of 3-4 tonnes, it is possible to get 5-6 tonnes per hectare," said Mr. Shamugia.
According to the Minister, the involvement of experts and specialists is crucial in increasing farmers' capabilities, enabling them to grow and get more crops at a lower cost.

"Our strategy to increase the wheat harvest in the country to 50% remains a priority, and I believe it will be accomplished without difficulty, also I think that the mills will gradually resume their work process. It depends on the current prices. However, as you know, we are expecting a new harvest. In this sense, new prices will be set. Therefore, let's not be pessimistic, and gloomy, let's be optimistic and enthusiastic. I believe that, in the end, farmers will benefit from growing wheat and harvesting more crops. "We will support this process," declared the Minister.
