Otar Shamugia: ‘’Considering the current situation, we decided to lift the ban on the export of wheat in advance,".

’With the most recent analysis of the given circumstances, we decided to lift the ban on the export of wheat in advance," stated the Minister.

"We made the decision to suspend the export of wheat and barley in the summer of 2021 based on the given situation, which aimed to ensure that the locally produced products would serve the local demand. Considering food security threats, our decision was reasonable. After a few months, we lifted the ban on barley. Today, after reviewing the existing circumstances, we decided to lift the restriction on wheat as well," stated Mr. Otar Shamugia, Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture.

According to the Minister, the decision will assist farmers in selling their wheat in the free trade zone, as long as there is not a security threat to food security, and there are supplies, and domestic reserves of both flour and wheat in the country for 2-3 months; after 3 months, we are expecting a new harvest, noted the Minister.

"As a result, we decided to lift the wheat export embargo three months ahead of its original projected end in July, also, given the current circumstances, we believe it is reasonable to lift the ban," Mr. Otar Shamugia said.
