The Department of Environmental Supervision receives new equipment.

The Department of Environmental Supervision received 14 Renault Duster cars, 6 buggy cars, and 8 inflatable boats.  New equipment is crucial for detecting violations, such as illegal logging, poaching, and air pollution.

"We are implementing the most important reforms in the environmental policy. The reforms aim to bring legal regulations closer to the EU requirements. We actively cooperate with the civil sector, as well as with the Environmental Protection and Natural Resources Committee of the Parliament of Georgia. Several new draft laws are currently being reviewed in the legislative body, and certainly, the process is underway," stated Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture Mr. Otar Shamugia.

According to the Minister, the enforcement of regulations and implementation of environmental control is crucial. Consequently, the Department of Environmental Supervision is provided with the appropriate equipment to enhance its capabilities.

Currently, we have purchased different types of modern equipment - drones, photo traps, video recorders, dust particle measuring modern devices, with budget financing and donor assistance, and support from the German International Cooperation Society. The equipment will be transferred to the relevant services of the department, which will help them to more effectively implement the prevention and detection-investigation of environmental violations. ", said the Minister.
New Renault Dusters are equipped with a "JPS" tracking device, which allows patrolling in hard-to-reach areas. The Department employees will use buggy cars to patrol practically inaccessible places.

The Deputy Minister Mr. Kakha Kakabadze, Head of the Department of Environmental Supervision Mr. Levan Jgharkawa, as well as representatives of the Department of Biodiversity and Forestry, the National Agency for Wildlife, the ECO. Georgia project of the German International Cooperation Society (GIZ), and environmental non-governmental organizations attended the meeting.

According to Mrs. Nino Chkhobadze, Chair of the Greens Movement of Georgia/Friends of the Earth- Georgi, strengthening the environmental supervision department is very important, especially in the direction of illegal fishing.

"Poachers are destroying our ichthyofauna to such an extent that it may even be difficult to restore it. Against this background, it is very important to impose strict sanctions and take effective control in this area. The department should work as hard as possible to stop poaching", said Mrs. Nino Chchobadze.

According to Mr. Christian Gönner, the Head of the program (‘’ECO. Georgia ‘’) forest sector reform support project in Georgia, the German government wishes to support the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia in the implementation of the forest sector reform and forest preservation. The technical assistance is provided to help the country to embrace a sustainable forest management mechanism that would ensure both the preservation of the forest sector and the protection of the ecosystem, environment, biodiversity, including mitigation of climate change.
