Rehabilitation of the old refinery area in Batumi was discussed at the meeting.

Under the cooperation of the Czech Development Agency and the Government of the Autonomous Republic of Adjara, the project "Quantification of health and environmental risks and support for rehabilitation of Batumi former refinery complex" is launched.

The Deputy Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, Mr. Solomon Pavliashvili, the Minister of Finance and Economy of the Autonomous Republic of Ajara, Mr. Jaba Putkaradze, and the Ambassador of the Czech Republic, Petr Mikiska discussed issues related to the mentioned project.

"I would like to express my gratitude to the Czech Embassy and the Czech Development Agency for their long-standing cooperation. The primary purpose of the ongoing project in Batumi is to conduct a thorough examination of the polluted site, remediate the area and identify hazardous waste. The research developed under the mentioned project could be used to solve similar challenges in other areas," said Mr. Solomon Pavliashvili.

During the meeting, the parties provided an ecological assessment of the old refinery in Batumi.

The overall goal of the project is to determine the separate sources of pollution in the area of the old refinery by conducting a detailed study, also to identify the ecological and health-related risks, and undertake corrective measures for the deficiencies in the documentation of the rehabilitation project.

Technical and economic feasibility studies will be taken within the framework of the project based on the results of a preliminary study. The technical and investment (financial) components of the rehabilitation measures will be assessed as part of the evaluation. Rehabilitation project documentation will be prepared.
