Nino Tandilashvili submitted Amendments to the Draft Laws on the ‘’Creation and Management of Javakheti Protected Areas", and the ‘’Status of Protected Areas" to the Parliament of Georgia.

At the sitting of the Environmental Protection and Natural Resources Committee, the Parliament of Georgia, the Deputy Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, Mrs. Nino Tandilashvili, presented amendments to the draft laws on the ‘’Creation and Management of Protected Areas of Javakheti region ", and the ‘’Status of Protected Areas".

 

It should be mentioned, that the boundaries were determined for the Protected Areas of Javakheti region, specifically Faravani, Abuli, and Sagamo Lake Managed Reserves; Moreover, the demarcation of boundaries in the Tsiv-Gombori Range has also come to an end.

 

 "Demarcation is carried out after the creation or expansion of each new protected area. Determining the exact boundaries will allow the local population to register their land plots, which fell within the borders of the park as a result of the expansion of the national park", Mrs. Nino Tandilashvili stated.
The Deputy Minister emphasized that the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture actively continues to work on the expansion of protected areas. In 2022, the area of protected areas increased by 116.7 thousand hectares and currently covers more than 912 thousand hectares, which is about 13% of the country's territory.

 

The Deputy Minister also presented other important draft laws, such as "The Agreement on the Conservation of Cetaceans of the Black Sea, Mediterranean Sea and contiguous Atlantic area (ACCOBAMS)", the draft "On State Property"; Draft Amendments to the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer (The 1987 Montreal Protocol), adopted at Kigali on October 15, 2016. "Minamata Convention on Mercury " and other related draft laws were submitted by the Government of Georgia for ratification.

 

According to Mrs. Nino Tandilashvili, the said draft laws respond to the relevant directives of the European Union and will contribute to the fulfillment of the obligations taken under the EU-Georgia  Association Agreement.
