Otar Shamugia meets the representatives of the Georgian Beekeepers Union.

The Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, Mr. Otar Shamugia, met with the representatives of the Georgian Beekeepers Union. During the meeting, the parties discussed the current situation in the beekeeping field, the needs of farmers, and the export potential of Georgian honey.

 

According to Mr.  Shamugia, programs supporting the beekeeping field are being implemented nationwide. The state makes the greatest possible efforts to assist beekeepers, and the state programs are developed to promote high-quality production and expand exports.

 

The Executive Director of the Georgian Beekeepers' Association, Aleko Papava, focused on the needs of beekeeper farmers, emphasizing the importance of activating the hive registration-identification process and controlling bee diseases. It was noted that establishing a traceability system will considerably contribute to expanding honey production and export.

 

The conversation touched upon the current activities within the state initiatives toward promoting beekeeping. At this stage, 45 bee farms with 7,000 hives are registered in the National Food Agency's registration-identification system.

 

The Ministry will adopt essential measures, including technical assistance, to increase farmers' interest and registration identification. 

 

The Deputies of the Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, Mr. Kakha Kakabadze and Mr. Tengiz Nasaridze, representatives of the National Food Agency, the Rural Development Agency, and the international non-governmental organization "Mercy Corps" attended the meeting.
