The Government of Georgia Approves a Plan for Managing the Ambient Air Quality for 2023-2025,

The mentioned plan, "On Ambient Air Protection," is prepared in compliance with the law of Georgia and serves as a sectoral policy document. The presented project aims to improve ambient air quality by implementing appropriate, result-oriented measures.

The territory of Georgia is divided into six zones for atmospheric air quality monitoring and management: the Black Sea zone, the Western zone, the Central zone, the Eastern zone, the Highland zone, and the Tbilisi agglomeration.

The new plan covers the city of Rustavi near Tbilisi and the municipalities of Marneuli and Bolnisi.

The 2023-2025 Air Quality Management Plan describes in detail the purpose of the plan, tasks, existing problems in terms of air pollution, sources of pollution, activities required to fix the current situation, coordination mechanism, agencies responsible for the implementation of activities, activity performance indicators, deadlines and the corresponding budget.

The plan includes expansion of air quality monitoring, assessment of the impact of air pollution on human health and efforts for raising public awareness.

The Representatives of the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia and other state agencies, representatives of the Parliament of Georgia, self-governments of relevant municipalities, administration of the state representative and civil society were involved in the preparation of the project.

The draft plan was developed with the support of the United Nations Development Programme and the Government of Sweden, with Ministry officials, international and local experts working on the document. The mentioned process also included public consultations and a public discussion.

It is worth noting that the offered plan is an expanded version/ continuation of the "Action Plan to Improve Air Quality in Rustavi (2020-2022)," although it covers a considerably broader area.

Significant changes have been made in reducing air pollution from the industrial sector within the Rustavi Plan, which has yielded positive results. However, the challenges remain for which the Central Zone Plan has been prepared.
