Otar Shamugia: " This year, the state provided targeted and appropriate aid to hazelnut producers, and we will continue further support as needed."

After the government session, the Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, Mr. Otar Shamugia, spoke to the media representatives about the state programs supporting the development of the hazelnut sector.

"hazelnuts are one of the important export crops for Georgia, with more than 70% exported to EU countries. Years ago, we had a serious challenge in the shape of the Asian stink bug, but we launched a program, and the state devoted significant resources to fighting the invasive pest every year.
However, more is needed; the farmers must care for their gardens. We had a good harvest in 2021, about 46 thousand tonnes. Hence, the export rate was good, and the quality was better, but in 2022, due to various factors, including climatic conditions, the maintenance failed, and the harvest could have been better.

We saw that the industry and our farmers needed support in this direction, and we developed a targeted support program based on European practice. In the European Union, there is a direct payment system, based on which we developed the program, and we deliberately helped farmers purchase crop maintenance /care products. We have supported small farmers with hazelnut orchards of up to 3 hectares. In a very short time, we made a cadastre, which allowed us to identify hazelnut farmers and provide them with this assistance. It is important to take the appropriate treatment so that the farmer can get a better quality crop. Those who care for it properly have a good harvest; the price is better when one has a quality harvest. This year, the state has provided targeted and appropriate support for farmers. We will continue further support according to the need", said the Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, Mr. Otar Shamugia.
