Otar Shamugia: "An early warning system is not a single device or even a sensor that will be deployed and will provide us with information"

After today's government session, the Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, Mr Otar Shamugia, spoke about the early warning system.

According to the Minister, the early warning system is not a single device or even a sensor that will be deployed and will provide us with information".

"The early warning system is a whole complex of measures, consisting of monitoring devices, including a weather station, radar, and hydrometer, which provides information, upon which the corresponding forecast is spread, and the information is provided to the relevant services.

"We frequently hear that nothing has been done in this area, and also, we hear that donors have allocated some funds, which is the sum granted by our sponsors, the Green Climate Fund and the United Nations Development Programme, which has been implementing one of the initiatives in this direction since 2018. All these statements aim to discredit them. We work with their experts on these matters.

More than 150 meteorological and hydrological monitoring stations have been purchased as part of the project, with some already placed and others in the process.
In addition, we have purchased two modern radars in Western and Eastern Georgia in recent years and prepared maps reflecting the dangers of different natural disasters. All these maps will be completed by the end of the year.h This is one of the primary reasons for us to identify potential locations of the occurrences of natural hazards.

The next stage is to install an alarm system similar to the one on Devdorak, which requires a separate investigation on how to install it in each district. However, the first stage is a proper monitoring system. We want to inform you that crucial steps have already been taken in this direction in recent years," said the Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, Mr Otar Shamugia.
