Under the decision of the Government of Georgia, an additional fee of GEL 50 per ton, totaling GEL 250, was imposed on flour imports.
After the government session, the Deputy Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, Mr. Tengiz Nasaridze, briefed media representatives on the decision of the government aiming to promote the sale of local wheat.
Â
"Considering ongoing global market processes, a "non-standard" situation has been created regarding wheat price formation and logistics. In this regard, a decision was made a few months ago to impose an extra fee of GEL 200Â on flour imports, which helped to balance the situation. However, throughout these months, it has been revealed that flour imports still show an upward trend.
Over and over again, this is related to the volatility in price formation caused by the surplus of crops in the global market. Considering all the factors mentioned above, we have decided to charge an additional GEL 50 per tonne for importing flour (totally GEL 250), - stated Mr. Tengiz Nasaridze.

According to the Deputy Minister, this year's wheat harvest is of poor quality due to natural disasters and climatic conditions.
"Furthermore, in the case of import, the government has decided to impose an additional fee of GEL 100 on barley and bran- a product received through wheat processing. It is noteworthy that there were no regulations on bran until today.
Â
The adopted decision will considerably assist local wheat growers in selling their harvested wheat at a price that enables them to continue their activities and further contributes to the country's economic growth, which has been a growing trend so far.
It should be mentioned that the decision to increase the price of flour imports will not affect bread prices; there is no risk of increasing bread prices. This decision will help to sell local wheat," stated the Deputy Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture. Â
Â
Mr. Tengiz Nasaridze emphasized that the Ministry constantly communicates with wheat producers, the processing sector and field representatives. Accordingly, active meetings preceded these decisions, creating an aid package and a temporary mechanism due to the need. Moreover, considering the current market situation, these decisions will be adjusted later.
